The article deals with the political and social background of the General Land Centennial Exhibition, held in 1891 in Prague (Prague Jubilee Exhibition), and interprets the central structure of the exhibition - the Industrial Palace. Technical models of this building are searched for, other than in Paris, which has been unilaterally highlighted in present publications. The design of the Industrial Palace was based on wider tradition of typology, construction practice and related theory connected with the construction of large glass halls, mainly railway and exhibition halls, developed in the third quarter of the 19th century not only in England (Crystal...

Josef Holeček
Staletá Praha 35, 1/2019, 26-50 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2019.1.02
A very detailed building-historical survey carried out in 2017 and 2018 and supplemented by restoration surveys proved the special and unique constructional design and art and symbolic features of the Prague Industrial Palace, important also in the international context. The Industrial Palace of architect Bedřich Münzberger shifted the architectural potential of the steel truss structure in spatial design and was also surprisingly radical in the articulation of tectonic elements of traditional architectural morphology. The article reflects the subordination of the structural possibilities of modern steel structures to the thinking of a traditional...

The article presents a restoration survey of twenty paintings of the Slav Epic, carried out at the end of 2016 by photographic and laboratory methods, archival research and evaluation of current knowledge. The author based his work on preparatory drawings, historical photographs and, above all, the opportunity to examine the paintings, exhibited at the Veletržní Palace in Prague. Ultraviolet rays revealed various stages of repairing Mucha's work in the 20th century, and x-rays showed a gradual transition from tempera to oil painting and the increasing...

Hedvika Křížová
Staletá Praha 35, 1/2019, 138-158 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2019.1.05
The article deals with the architectural conception and realization of ecclesiastic buildings in Prague between 1980 and 2000. Following the excursus to the historical circumstances of the ecclesiastic constructions in Prague during the 20th century the article focuses more closely on the period after 1950. Two buildings from the 1980s and 90s are discussed in detail - The Seventh-day Adventist Oratory in Smíchov and the Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception of Virgin Mary in Strašnice, which in the author's opinion are so pronounced that they deserve to be presented in a mutual contrast. Moreover, they are the only solitary realizations...
