Staletá Praha 32, 2/2016, 2-27 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2016.2.01
Simon of the White Lion belonged not only to the eminent Prague citizens and Hussite politicians, but he was also a merchant, a writer and a known bibliophile, i.e. an outstanding man in his period deviating from our vision of a typical Prague burgher of that time. Representation, family relations, ownership of rural estates, connections with nobility, use of a coat of arms etc. - these are circumstances, which can be observed during a research of the towns' environment. Example of Simons' personality can draw attention to various types of sources, which enable one to uncover the life of a late medieval burgher, despite their specific and often very...

Matouš Semerád, Jan Havrda
Staletá Praha 32, 2/2016, 53-72 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2016.2.03
Around the mid-19th century three chain bridges were built over River Vltava in Prague. The earliest of these, the bridge of Francis I by the constructor Bedřich Schnirch, was replaced in 1899 by a new stone bridge, today the Legion bridge. During a standard archaeological rescue excavation, the entrance ramp of the bridge was revealed in a trench for the reconstruction of a water pipe in Vítězná street, Malá Strana. This article also mentions other archaeological excavations of Prague industrial buildings.

Miroslav Kovář, Veronika Staňková
Staletá Praha 32, 2/2016, 73-83 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2016.2.04
Works of adaptation in the school building No. 886/I during the years 2010 and 2011 gave the possibility to verify earlier presumptions concerning the survival of monastery remains in the basement of current building. Operative documentation in advance followed by archaeological excavation confirmed this hypothesis. Remains of the monastery church of St. Cross were excavated under the floors of the cellar in the south wing and adjacent part of the yard, documenting a long history of its development since the second half of the 13th century to the demolition of the building in 1890. Also the secondary use of numerous fragments of the demolished church...

Michaela Selmi Wallisová
Staletá Praha 32, 2/2016, 84-108 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2016.2.05
This article concerns the archaeological context of the water logged area called Jáma (The pit) or Louže (The puddle), discovered during the excavations prior to the construction of collectors in the Vodičkova Street to the west from the Wenceslaus square in Prague. After the foundation of Prague New town this natural depression with fluctuating water level was used as an almost bottomless dump for the rubbish produced by the medieval town. Numerous finds of textile fragments along with other artefacts of organic and inorganic material were recovered illustrating the daily life from the 14th to the onset of the 16th century. This site with conditions...

An attempt of determination of approximately twenty stamps on bricks, which were most probably produced in the defunct historic brickworks in the area of Prague 6. The stamps referring mainly to the brickworks owners can be identified thanks to The history of Bubeneč, Dejvice, Šárka and surroundings, a historic toponymical study by František Vacek, and other sources, including geological maps, directories and period photographs.
