Despite several decades of archaeological excavations on the monastery grounds, there are only a few publications devoted to the form of the earliest settlement in this part of Prague in more detail. The presented text collects the results of archaeological excavations and publishes an updated plan of all archaeological actions (area excavations, trenches and test pits) carried out both in the monastery and in its immediate surroundings since 1940. In particular the documentation is made available, which regards the contexts prior the construction of the monastery or associated with the time of its foundation. For comparison, attention is also paid...

Staletá Praha 38, 2/2022, 40-65 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2022.2.02

Extensive archaeological excavations, which were conducted at the Národní Avenue in Prague, allows for a broad study of various phases of the city development, from the pre-location settlement at the end of the early Middle Ages, through the medieval proto-town and the developed city to the advanced Central European metropolis of the modern period. The analyses of archaeozoological and archaeobotanical assemblages reveal not only the information about the changes in the former inhabitants' diet during the studied timeline, but also allows to compare the materials from different sectors of the excavated area or the finds obtained with the use of different...

Ein Flinder aus Böhmen

Michal Tryml

Staletá Praha 38, 2/2022, 77-85 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2022.2.04

The text contributes to the discussion about the dating potential of single coins placed in graves as the obol of the dead. Concerned is a coin from the High Middle Ages, called a "flútek," found during excavations in Králodvorská Street in the Old Town of Prague in 1971. The find of relatively well known context was confronted with data obtained by radiocarbon analysis of the skeleton from the same grave.

Fortification of the southern and eastern perimeter of the early Gothic predecessor of today's Malá Strana

Jarmila Čiháková

Staletá Praha 38, 2/2022, 86-157 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2022.2.05

The early Gothic fortification of the town below the Prague Castle ceased to meet the city development and the requirements for reliable military protection already a hundred years after its construction. With the construction of new walls in a new route in the mid-14th century, the earlier ramparts were deprived of the reason for their existence. Several centuries of their gradual liquidation are completed by the efforts of several generations of researchers to obtain and present an idea of the ramparts' structure, building form and development and to protect the archaeological remains from destruction. Each line of the city fortification has its...

Miroslav Kovář, Martin Musílek

Staletá Praha 38, 2/2022, 158-179 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2022.2.06

The paper deals with the issue of the tower houses within the block of flats No. 1071, which was part of the newly planted early Gothic quarter of St. Gall in the Old Town of Prague. The construction of the local houses is dated by the authors to the period around the mid-13th century. Due to the intensive business contacts between Prague and Regensburg merchants, the inspiration for building houses with a tower is sought in the environment of the Holy Roman Empire city of Regensburg. The most intensive trade contacts between the two cities took place during the 13th and the first half of the 14th century.
