The study of building stone dressing is still a new discipline, which is currently based on evolving methods of mechanoscopy and tool marks analysis. This article presents the initial results of a project systematically mapping the stone dressing in the Prague territory from the earliest structures to the present. Presented is the reconstruction of stone tools in various periods and the work with them, along with stone dressing practice during the construction of Prague Romanesque houses - a phenomenon that has no comparison in the Central Europe. Documentation of the processing of the construction material reveals the craft techniques of the late...

The article summarizes the latest knowledge, revises the current data and brings a new perspective on the evaluation of the medieval building development of the former Dominican female convent in the area of today's No. 211 in Prague Old Town, which replaced the former Templar commandry. The survey also identified an early Gothic tower house from the 13th century - a single-wing building adjacent to the corner tower. The house was subsequently incorporated into the High Gothic construction of the Dominican convent. The convent grew up in two construction stages in the second and third quarters of the 14th century. Documentation work during the adaptation...

After the fortification of Prague Old Town on the right Vltava bank was completed in 1230s-1250s, Ottokar II of Bohemia issued in 1257 the establishment of a medieval legal city in the area below Prague Castle. Fortifying building activities could evenly follow the Old Town fortification construction. The area of the early Gothic town corresponds with the historical centre of today's Malá Strana district. With the later expansion of the city, the fortifications lost their significance and disappeared. Its fractional remains are very rarely revealed by building history surveys and archaeological excavations during the reconstruction of houses in the...
Medieval hafted axe from the Kolowrat Palace in Prague : Notes on the functional interpretation of the tool
Richard Rosenberg
Staletá Praha 37, 2/2021, 140-154 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2021.2.04
Axes are relatively frequent additions to collections, but their records and description are usually insufficient. For this purpose the state standard nomenclature ought to be observed, to facilitate the comprehensibility and compatibility of the description of this tool type. The paper shows the range of comprehensive information which can be obtained from a similar find for subsequent arguments of its form and function. A detailed examination of the tool, its analogies, illustrations and especially recent use revealed that it is most likely a carpenter's chopping or scoring axe, which is still used in manual rough carpentry to chop the mass of the...
