In the second half of the 19th century, Prague and its suburbs became the scene of a massive boom of the nascent civil society, technical and economic growth, culture and art, and also, depending on the huge building development of European cities, the rise of architecture and construction of the historicism era, followed by Art Nouveau and modernism. To a large extent, typical rich architectural decor became an inherent part of public and private building designs of that period. This design was greatly influenced by the painter Josef Mánes (1820-1871), who stimulated also many other branches of Czech fine art of that time. The study examines specific...

Petr Kitzler
Staletá Praha 38, 1/2022, 28-47 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2022.1.02
The following article is the first more detailed up to date text dedicated to the academic painter Josef Kitzler (1891-1965?), born in Královské Vinohrady, who spent many years of his life travelling, working and exhibiting in a number of European, American and African cities. Today an almost forgotten artist, painter and illustrator, his work generally belonged to the broader stream of classical modernism of the First Czechoslovak Republic. However, Kitzler's paintings inspired by his repeated stays in South Africa, often depicting local natives as well as lush exotic vegetation, thematically significantly diverge from the main stream and do not lose...

The article reviews the life and work of the Italian mosaicist Sauro Ballardini (1925-2010), who from the early 1960s to 1981 worked at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts as a teacher and devoted himself to monumental mosaics. His opus musivum remains an integral part of the history of this art technique in Bohemia, as well as remarkable conjunction of contemporary requirements placed on public art commissions and the personal contribution of an artist of Italian origin and training. The authors present a range of Ballardini's mosaics preserved in the Czech Republic and deal in more detail with the author's largest glass realization in the country, the...
Unknown remains of the main altar of the collegiate church in Vyšehrad from around 1600?

Staletá Praha 38, 1/2022, 116-121 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2022.1.05
In 2021, the Prague City Museum acquired excellent monumental wood carvings of St. Peter and Paul of Prague origin from the turn of the 17th century. Their style has no direct comparison in Bohemia; the closest workshops capable of creating such work operated in southern Germany. In Prague at that time, there were not many institutions that could afford such a spectacular commission, nor discerning customers with the range of knowledge exceeding the local horizon. Therefore, it is possible to connect the sculptures with Vyšehrad, where at the time of the reconstruction of the collegiate church of St. Peter and Paul the initiative of the chapter's superiors...
