Observation of River Vltava water levels in Prague
Die Wasserstandüberwachung an der Moldau in Prag
Ladislav Hrdlička
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 4-12 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.02
Any river flowing through a town is a vitalising, as well as destructive phenomenon, for the town's population and Prague is no exception. The evidence of flooding impact on the Prague historic centre is captured in numerous stratigraphy revealed by archaeological methods, mostly as layers raising the surface level as protection against the destructive high water. Flooding was one of the most significant reasons for the transformation of the Prague medieval ground relief. The attempt to identify such episodes with the archaeological context led to the need for the determination of the level of the floods known from the written evidence, and a revision...
Contribution to the knowledge of the Knights Templars' commandry in Prague Old Town
Miroslav Kovář, Zdeněk Dragoun
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 13-31 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.03
The aim of this study is to classify the remains of the early Gothic buildings in front of the east wing of the former Dominican cloister No. 211/1 in Prague Old Town. These remains are traditionally related to the Templars commandry built in the reign of Wenceslaus I. A survey of the cellars (2009, 2011) recognised more of the extent and character of the medieval structures associated with this commandry.
Research of historic buildings by "the reverse project" method
Martin Müller
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 32-40 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.04
The author compared his own geodetic survey of the Romanesque church of St. John the Baptist in Hostivař with earlier published groundplans of this building. By conversion of the survey into period units of measurement (the Bohemian ell) he attempted to reconstruct the Romanesque project. This method signed as the "reverse project" also includes an attempt to reconstruct a possible way of marking out the Romanesque church. The positive result indicates a possibility for the further research of heritage buildings.
Analysis from two cess pits and problems with their interpretation

Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 41-76 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.05
Comparative analysis of the finds inventory from two cess pits. Large assemblage of archaeological finds from excavations of two house plots situated in various parts of Prague brings new information about the material culture of its inhabitants in late medieval and early Post medieval times.
Contribution to the building history of a former town hospital and a poor house of St. Bartholomew at Nové Město in Prague (Nos. 427 and 435)
This article briefly discusses the early history of the hospital at St. Bartholomew's church at Nové Město in Prague in view of the results of archaeological excavations realised in 2010. The excavation revealed remains of St. Bartholomew's hospital church founded at the beginning of the 16th century. The destruction layers contained architectural fragments, mainly vault ribs, which may derive from the demolition material of the church prior to new social buildings construction in 1884.
A matter of Prague Early Medieval pottery chronology
Jarmila Čiháková
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 91-120 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.07
The interpretation of archaeological excavations with Early Medieval contexts in Central Bohemia has problems relating to vessel description and chronology. This region is generally connected with pottery types used in the central Prague area. The long lasting intensive settlement at Malá Strana yielded numerous detailed stratigraphies, which form a basis for the relative chronology depicted in sections on a pottery-stratigraphical chart for each excavation. For this article only such research excavations were selected, which included a stratigraphy with absolutely datable finds. A long lasting aim for linking the relative pottery chronology with absolute...
New knowledge about the construction of the Judith Bridge in Prague
This article summarises results from the last archaeological excavations in 2011 at the Křižovnické square at Staré Město in Prague on the site with a preserved part of the Romanesque bridge. Brief introduction to the history of the Judith Bridge construction and its recognition is supplemented by a description of finds contexts, analysis of the results and compilation of new knowledge concerning the construction.

Research on mortars from Judith Bridge in Prague
Petr Kuneš
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 137-148 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.09
This article briefly summarises the results of laboratory research on mortars samples from Judith Bridge, which were taken from its remains at Křižovnické square, Prague 1 during rescue excavations in 2011. Considering the lack of comparative research on mortars from early medieval buildings in Prague, this research aimed to characterise and document the samples and their mutual comparison within different constructional elements of the bridge, i.e. the rubble masonry core, the bridge deck and the paving. Composition of the mortars is discussed; their macro and microscopic structure; mechanic characteristics and other basic properties. Specific attention...
A contribution to the knowledge of natural conditions of Nové Město - excavations in Panská Street No. 1308/II
Ein Beitrag zum Erkennen der Naturbedingungen der Prager Neustadt - die Forschung in Panská G. Nr. Konskr. 1308/II
Petr Starec, Petra Houfková, Alexandra Bernardová
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 149-164 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.10
Archaeological excavations in Panská Street No. 1308/II in Prague revealed fluvial sediments under the basements floors, deposited by a former Pleistocene water course deriving to the current plot from southeast (from Vinohrady area). Palynological analysis of later sediments from horizontal engineering - geotechnical bore holes into the part of the plot without cellars identified a high concentration of pollen grains, from which some determined species indicate a damp site, which could be explained by the presence of surface water in the Middle Ages. Compilation of knowledge gained from underneath No. 1308/II and its surroundings leads to a presumption,...
A medieval kilns in Hellichova Street at Malá Strana in Prague
Mittelalterliche Öfen aus der Hellichova G. in Prag-Kleinseite : Revision der Forschungsergebnisse aus dem Jahr 1969
Jan Havrda, Kristýna Matějková, Michal Tryml
Staletá Praha 28, 2/2012, 165-174 | DOI: 10.56112/sp.2012.2.11
Unpublished results of a rescue excavation in Hellichova Street at Malá Strana in Prague 1 pursued in 1969. In a trench section an amateur archaeologist discovered two oval features in the depth of 2,4 m, probably kilns, and gathered a number of pottery fragments on the spoil heaps. Since most of them are dated to the 12th-13th century, this date may be associated also with the features, interpreted as possible pottery kilns. The settlement history of this mikroregion is characterised by the absence of the pottery earlier than 12th century (apart from two sherds), which almost excludes any intensive activity on this site in this phase of the Early...
