Between 1990 and 2020, the Historic Centre of Prague underwent a fundamental transformation reflecting the new situation after the fall of the communist regime in 1989. This transformation is most evident in the construction of the new buildings, which initially sprang up mainly on long-standing vacant plots, creating a new architectural layer. The restoration of St Wenceslas Church in Zderaz was carried out in stages over a long period, from 1886 to 1930. Integrating the remains of a medieval church into a block of redevelopment-type buildings turned out to be one of the most controversial topics in heritage preservation at the time, distinct from other Prague instances and technically and conceptually demanding.
